The 4 days’ tour features the most stunning views of the great Virunga ranges and the surrounding communities. Gorilla tracking in Bwindi is also another great highlight of this short trip as you come in a face to face contact with the silver back. A Gorilla encounter is absolutely the most exciting way to end a journey that involves so much of hiking.

Day 1: Arrival and travel to the Volcanoes National Park

Our English speaking guide will meet you at the airport and depending on the time of arrival, you will have a tour around Kigali city. The city has several hills, clean and beautiful streets, modern roads and interesting suburbs. You will visit the Gisozi genocide memorial site and do some shopping of local art/crafts if you wish to.  Lunch will be in Kigali and you will head to the volcanoes national park. Rwanda’s rolling green hills create another beautiful scenery as you drive through the country side. Arrive in the late evening hours for dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.

Day 2: Mount Karisimbi Hiking

You will wake up to take breakfast and be driven to the park headquarters in Kinigi. At Kinigi, you will be registered with other hikers at around 9am but the actual hike starts at around 10:00am. You will then be assigned mountain guides to lead before being driven to the starting point. Come with packed lunch and dinner (can be arranged in advance). You must bring along camping gear, hiking gear, drinking water, a walking stick and hand gloves. You will start by climbing the edge of the volcano, then go through the ridges, bamboo forests, calderas and steep sections. Instead of heading straight for the summit, you will stop midway to take a rest. A camp will be set up were you will have dinner and sleep for the night.

Day 3: Reach the Mount Karisimbi Summit

After the previous day’s rest, you will wake up early morning to embark the summit climb that takes between 3 to 4 hours. You will be treated to remarkable views of the Nyamulagira and Nyiragongo active volcanoes, the dense forests, beautiful landscapes, surrounding communities and the greater Virunga ranges once on the summit. You will later begin to descent back to the bottom for your late lunch at Kinigi were you will meet our guide cross to Bwindi to prepare for gorilla tracking the following day. Bwindi has the highest number of gorillas making more than half of the world’s total population of these great apes. Dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Gorilla tracking and departure

You will head to the park headquarters after an early morning breakfast and arrive by 7:00am for briefing and allocation of a gorilla family to track. You will be split in groups of 8 people that will be led by a team of guides from UWA to lead you to the actual home of the gorillas. You are allowed to stay with the gorillas for only one hour which starts from the time of contact. After this great wild encounter with the Gorillas, you will be led back to the park headquarters for your gorilla tracking permit. Check out of the lodge and depart for Kigali for your flight back home depending on your flight schedule.
